The worst time to fix your air conditioning is the first really hot day of summer.

Why? Because that is when everyone else is trying to fix theirs. Mechanics are booked for weeks, store shelves are empty, and you are stuck sweating in traffic.

Checking your system in spring (or even winter) ensures you are road-trip ready when the sun comes out. Here is a simple 3-Minute Pre-Season Test you can do right now.

Step 1: The Defrost Test

Start your car. Turn the fan to high and the setting to “Defrost” (Windshield). Listen for a “click” from the engine bay.

  • Why? The AC compressor runs during defrost mode to remove humidity. If it engages, your electrical system is likely fine.

Step 2: The Temperature Test

Switch the setting to “Max Cool” and “Recirculate.” Put your hand over the vent.

  • Result A: It’s ice cold immediately. (You are good to go!)
  • Result B: It takes a long time to get cool, or it’s just “cool-ish,” not cold. (You are low on refrigerant.)
  • Result C: It’s blowing hot air. (You are empty or have a leak.)

Step 3: The Visual Inspection

Pop the hood. Look at the aluminum AC lines. Do you see any oily residue around the connections?

  • Why? Refrigerant carries oil. If gas is leaking out, oil usually leaks out with it, leaving a greasy spot that attracts dirt. If you see this, you definitely need a can of Stop Leak.

Be Proactive

If you fell into “Result B” or “Result C,” don’t wait. Ordering a refill kit now means you can spend 15 minutes in your driveway this weekend and not worry about it for the rest of the year.
